I use a second machine running Windows for that kind of stuff. The only thing I really miss on Linux is a sample engine that is on par with Kontakt or EWQL Play in terms of libraries (especially for exotic or ethnic instruments). I use the Harrison plugins, Calf plugins, LinuxDSP plugins (now known as OvertoneDSP, sadly they no longer distribute Linux plugins, they have a decent Pultec emulation), various other LV2 plugin sets that come with Ubuntu Studio. I'd love to be able to move over to linux if I could find some plugins that would get me in the ballpark of the plugins mentioned above. In windows on my particular system, it's almost as bad as monitoring off the playback head on a reel to reel deck! I was amazed at how much snappier everything was! I could live monitor through linux with a very acceptable amount of latency. The other day I loaded AVLinux on a different partition and installed 32C.

I've been running 32C on Windows 10 and have grown quite accustomed to using Klanghelm MJUC for Fairchild and UA 175/176 style compression and Valhalla Plate and Room plugins.
